The journey began with a pressing issue: lighting problems in the complex. The tragic shooting of an unarmed man in a dark stairwell made headlines and sparked widespread outrage. In response, Colette Pean, Executive Director of East New York Restoration, and Karen Caldwell, President of the Pink Houses Tenant Association, joined forces to create a safer and more welcoming environment for residents.

The Senior Fitness Hub was born out of this collaboration, with OACNY (the Open Access Coalition of New York) playing a crucial role in its development. Community partners worked together to secure funding for the project, which began taking shape in 2019. The design process involved gathering feedback from community members through public visioning sessions and surveys.
